The Beginning
I logged in to Cisco's NetAcad curriculum website.
It was a sweet reminicent moment, to see the old pictures I got to see for two years straigh while a High school student.
It made me realize that old knowledge is hard to die off. Reminders of how a network works, the roles routers, switches, servers and
client end points play in this beautiful inception called; the internet.
I reviewed the curriculum because I am anticipating an interview with Ridgeline apps for a position of network admin.
My confidence needed a boost as my concentration has been diverted to getting a software engineering position. However, my positive
attitude us seeing this as a blessing in disguise. Its a foot in the door, a chance I hope to get to my goal of being a remote
admin or coder. That is the end goal, that is what my vision is; to travel and open my laptop to sustain that lifestyle. Because I have
experience in the field from the days of Hyatt, this is the best scenario. I know for a fact, it will be better pay than what is offered at the
Ritz for their Loss prevention officer position. 17 /hr. I hope to at least make over $20 /hr on this network admin position, after all that is my
next promotion I never got at the Hyatt.
With more money, I hope to receive more responsibility. Talking with Jeremy I got insight into the workings of how the future is shaping the IT field/
Everyone is moving to the cloud, and having the SAAS (software as a service) model. In short we know that cloud is basically a cluster
or redundant servers and really routes to guarantee the most uptime to a customer. Amazon, Google and Microsoft are the ones dominating the market
with their AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure cloud offering. What this means is that long are the days where the comany buys their own hardware and keeps
it in house. Heck, long are the days of having an electrician come to a place to wire in Ethernet or Fiber. Long are the days of MDFs and IDFs at least
in terms of startups and SOHO networks.
Today, as stated its all living in the cloud, you pay to share resources in one of the many massive server farms offered by AWS, GCP or Azure. Because
these contenders are in fierce competition, services are getting cheaper and the competition grows, services such as CloudOcean and Roku are
SAAS specifically catered to launching SAAS's. So what is the role of IT turning to???
In short they are all moving to security. VPN's reign supreme, the concept of the remote office is becoming more enticing to the millenial workforce.
Imagine this, or as Jeremy said, "I dont like to trust any network, even our own office's". His vision is to have any network be an "office network"
really he means to say that he hopes any unsecured network have a VPN to their Cloud infastructure. That way engineers can code the backend, communicate
with each other and any other person needing to work on the cloud can do so in the comfort of their home office, coffee office, or anywhere
in the world.
So how do I feel with this opportunity? I am excited, job security is in well... IT security and I beleive this opportunity is right for my vision.
So I am hoping to get this role, do awesome, get some certifications and eventually end my tenure stay in Lake Tahoe as a prominent force in the tech
field. Wish me luck! March 5th 2020.
